Goodbye cash, credit cards, passport and all other means of identification. He'd managed to hold on to his mobile phone but didn't know any emergency or police numbers to call. After eventually trudging back to his hotel, in a very shocked state, he was able to obtain contact details for the British Consulate and make arrangements to rectify the situation and get his holiday back on track.

Go To Jail - Go Directly To Jail - Do Not Pass Go!

The next day my hungry friend (he had no money for breakfast) made his way on foot (he had no money for a taxi) towards the consulate only to get caught up in the aftermath of a terrorist attack on the US Consulate a short distance away. 3 dead Police Officers and 3 Dead PKK terrorists equals utter panic and a lot of checking of identity documents - of which he had none! And that is an offence in Turkey.

Lets just say that he didn't spend that night in his hotel room. With more pressing matters on their minds that day, it was a good few hours before my friend said goodbye to his Police hosts and finally made it to the Consulate a day later. His intended 2 day short stay in Istanbul before going on to Marmaris had extended to 4 days after which time he was more than ready to return to the UK and start saving for next years holiday - to the Isle of Wight!!

In today's world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

Not so long ago, armed rebel groups such as the FARC and the ELN, as well as the paramilitary factions meant to counter them, terrorized the population in most of the rural areas across the country, while the cities were ruled by the powerful drug cartels. Adding further grief to this sorry panorama was the rampant corruption found in all government, military and judicial levels. It's not an exaggeration to say that at one time, this was a nation ruled by criminals.

Nonetheless, public security has improved dramatically since. First, with a large dose of help (and pressure) from the United States, the dominant cartels based in Cali and Medellin were dismantled by the mid-nineties. The power vacuum left behind was soon filled by smaller criminal groups, as well as the rebels and paramilitary, but it also allowed the government to gradually regain control of its cities. At first, the authorities made the fatal mistake of trying to negotiate with the rebel groups, which only resulted in them gaining more strength and controlling more territory.

But like all good things in life, there is a price. Pizza's range from 300 to 550 rupees depending on the toppings! The best place to get pizza is Fire and Ice which somewhat of an institution in Thamel. A great place to relive the highlights of your trek with friends, while enjoying a delicious pizza and beverage of choice.

PASTA
A hearty dish of fresh handmade pasta will always satisfy any appetite. On those cold winter days, head to La Dolca Vita. Three floors of well decorated dining rooms and an alfresco style roof top terrace invites the diner in for a pasta feast. Serving sizes are generous and delicious. My personal favourite is the handmade Gnocchi del la Rossa (Gnocchi in a red wine and tomato sauce). Here the salads and pizza are also really good. Finish your meal off with a Lavatzza Italian Style Imported coffee.

Many of the ingredients are flown in from Japan, including the seafood. The food is AMAZING and a great tasting healthy meal here is not going to break the bank either. Around 400NPR will see you with a nice plate of Maki Sushi, a Ramen noodle dish, unlimited tea, miso soup, a selection of pickles and perhaps a chilled Ashi Beer. The atmosphere is cosy with a choice of table or cushion seating and the staff are super friendly and speak English and Japanese.

A CHOCOLATE HIT
So we have all been there, after a nice meal we still feel a tad unsatisfied and out taste buds are craving that sugar hit. Kathmandu may offer some great international cuisine but it not really known for desserts. Alas, allow me to let you in on a little secret - Try the absolutely amazingly delicious sizzling chocolate brownie at Road House....did I mention it's amazing. Add a scoop of homemade vanilla bean ice cream and you will surely be in chocoholic's heaven!

HOME COMFORTS
Ever seen the movie Ratatouille, the scene when the critic cries as the meal gives him a memory of his mothers cooking! We all get that home sick feeling sometimes, and food can give us real comfort when we need it. Head on to Northfield Cafe, the beef stroganoff served with mashed potatoes is the dish that almost brings me to my knees crying for my mum......right down to the lashing of cream and hint of rosemary. It is the perfect dish to help me over the homesick blues. Other home comfort delights on their menu include Sheppard's pie and everyone's favourite bangers and mash!

During the holidays or anytime you are traveling, it is important to watch your children for those minor ailments. By being prepared and observant, you can prevent any discomfort and keep your child happy during a long journey. Here are 5 things to look out for when on a trip with children;

Dehydration. Children and particularly babies are prone to dehydration while traveling. In the rush and fun of the trip, especially if it's sunny, children can become dehydrated. Double water intake and keep a baggie of fruit and or vegetables handy to snack on.
Motion Sickness. Believe it or not, kids are very susceptible to motion sickness. Ginger and or ginger capsules are a great remedy for them. Keep it available if they begin getting nauseous.
Altitude sickness. This is a tough ailment for all. Ascend slowly and descend if they have a headache or are showing signs of nausea.
Loss of appetite. Kids as well as adults tend to eat very little at the beginning of a trip. Be sure to continue with the fluids and have vitamin supplements to balance things out.
Ear pain. If a young child develops symptoms of ear discomfort, this can cause problems not only for them but for all that are around (crying, movement, etc.). Fluids and lite snacks result in a swallowing reflex which will help clear their ears.

If you monitor your child's moods and actions during travel you can prevent many of these minor ailments with the prescribed treatments. Try to relax and don't get to upset if your child is uncomfortable. They tend to respond to your moods as well.
